Rani Mukerji comes from a film-oriented family of Bengali origin. Her father, Ram Mukherjee, is a retired director and one of the founders of “Filmalaya Studios”. Her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, was a playback singer. Her brother, Raj Mukherjee is a film producer, now turned director. Her maternal aunt, Debashree Roy, was a Bengali-film actress and her cousin, Kajol is a Bollywood actress.

Rani Mukerji is a trained Odissi dancer, and began learning the dance in tenth grade. Mukerji studied at Maneckjee Cooper High School in Juhu, and later enrolled at Mithibai College in Mumbai.

In 2005, Rani Mukerji starred in four high-profile films: Black, Bunty Aur Babli, Paheli and The Rising. She was primarily noted for her performance in Black, for which she received numerous Indian awards. Her first release in 2006 was Karan Johar’s multi-starrer drama, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Ravi Chopra’s Baabul.
In 2007 she had films like Saawariya and Laga Chunari Mein Daag. Her only release in 2008, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, failed to do well. In 2009, Rani was seen in Dil Bole Hadippa and in 2011 No One Killed Jessica, The film, as well as Mukerji’s uninhibited acting, received positive review Rani won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress Award for this film. Rani was last seen in the movie Aiyyaa in 2012 and She will be next seen opposite Aamir Khan in Talaash.
